The collection includes correspondence, 1915-1929, and notes of Elvira Evelina (Worth) Jackson Walker Moffitt (b. 1836) of Richmond, Va., as president of the Matthew Fontaine Maury Association. Her correspondence is primarily with historians, political figures, association members, and potential donors concerning the raising of funds for a monument to Maury in Richmond and the unveiling of the monument in 1929, and the election of Maury to the Hall of Fame of New York University. Also, includes commonplace books kept by Mrs. Moffitt, 1920-1926. Also, includes letters, 1920-1929, written to Annie Hyman (Philips) Jackson as treasurer of the Association, and accounts kept by her; correspondence, 1915-1929, of Herbert Worth Jackson (1865-1936) as a trustee of the Association, in part concerning the publication of Jaquelin Ambler Caskie's "Life and Letters of Matthew Fontaine Maury" (Richmond, 1928), and Charles Lewis Lee's "Matthew Fontaine Maury" (Annapolis, 1927), and the unveiling of the monument to Maury in Richmond; record books containing accounts, minutes of meetings, membership rolls, and lists of correspondents; speeches, broadsides, by-laws, and resolutions; and materials concerning sculptor Frederick William Sievers (1872-1966) and his statue of Maury.

Frederick William Sievers (1872-1966), a sculptor, received his art education in Rome, Paris, and Richmond, Virginia. He worked out of Richmond, sculpting statues housed in Abingdon and Richmond, Virginia; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; Vicksburg, Mississippi; and New York City.
